Conduct interviews with prospective students
(learn more)
(collapse)
FAN members interview local prospective students for the Office of Admission. Interviews are conducted preferably
in person, but also over the phone and via Skype. Interviews are informal and conversational in tone and are
intended to personalize the admission process for prospective students and provide them with an opportunity to ask
questions about the university and life on campus, while simultaneously gathering more information on applicants
for the Office of Admission.
Interviews take place between the months of September and March (with the most activity from November through
February).
When a FAN member is assigned an interview with a local applicant, the FAN member is expected to contact the student,
schedule a mutually convenient time and place to meet, and to visit with the student for 30 minutes to an hour.
Following each interview, FAN members fill out an online evaluation on the individual applicant that then becomes
part of the student's application file.
When assigned an interview, FAN members are expected to make every effort to conduct the interview.
When time and/or distance warrants, a phone or Skype interview are acceptable alternatives. As needed, FAN members
do have the opportunity to opt out of interviews and/or other activities for a few months or year at a time, while
still maintaining long-term membership in the program. Otherwise, the Office of Admission relies on all active
members to be attentive to their FAN responsibilities in a timely fashion.
Each admission cycle, the number of interview assignments for individual FAN members varies by location and
applicant interest, but generally FAN members currently conduct one to four interviews per year. Furman does
not reimburse interview volunteers for travel or phone related expenses, but when an in-person interview is cost
or time prohibitive, FAN members are welcome to revert to phone or Skype interviews (which are free of charge) as
needed.
Interviewers are not expected to be as proficient as admission counselors. However, they are expected to read
through a thorough Interview Guide and other supplied materials and to refer any student questions that they are
unable to answer to an admission counselor for follow up.
Conduct interviews with international students
(learn more)
(collapse)
FAN members interview prospective students for the Office of Admission. Due to a high number of international
applicants (which include U.S. citizens living abroad) and a low number of international FAN members, the Office of
Admission needs many FAN members who are willing to conduct Skype interviews with prospective students in foreign
countries.
Skype is a free online software that enables video conferencing and calls.
While calling international students over the phone is allowed, Furman cannot reimburse FAN members for long
distance charges.
Interviews with international students are extremely important, as many of the students have never been to the
United States or Furman, and the students are generally very enthusiastic and touched to be reached out to in this way.
For students living in non-English speaking countries, these interviews also help the Office of Admission to gauge
English proficiency.
Like the in-person interviews, Skype interviews are informal and conversational
in tone. They are intended to both personalize the admission process for prospective students and to provide them
with an opportunity to ask questions about the university and life on campus, while simultaneously gathering more
information on applicants for the Office of Admission.

Represent Furman at college fairs
(learn more)
(collapse)
Throughout the year (but primarily in the fall and spring months) Furman's Admission Counselors are unable to
attend some college fairs due to distance or scheduling. When this occurs, FAN members are invited to represent
the university. This is a valuable way to increase Furman's presence at college fairs around the country and abroad.
When a FAN member volunteers to attend a fair, he/she will receive a package with all of the materials needed for
the event, along with thorough instructions. Following the fair, the FAN member is expected to ship the package back
to the Office of Admission using a pre-paid shipping label or voucher.
Volunteers are not expected to be as proficient as admission counselors. However, they are expected to read
through the provided materials and to then refer any student questions that they are unable to answer to an
admission counselor for follow up.
Attend special events
(learn more)
(collapse)
Special admission events take place throughout the year, and while the majority are in larger cities and major
markets, the scope is broadening. Events include Spring Yield Receptions for accepted students (which are usually in
April) and Summer Send-Offs for admitted students (typically in June, July, and August). A variety of receptions
for prospective students also take place in the fall.
Local FAN members are often invited to attend these events to help to further foster connections with potential
and future Furman students. FAN members mingle with students and/or their parents and are also often invited to
speak briefly at an event about personal Furman experiences and the value of a Furman education.

Furman alumni and parents often volunteer to serve as hosts for events such as the ones described above.
Events may take place in the hosts' private home or at an event space in a club, restaurant or other venue.
Hosts may also volunteer to financially contribute to or donate the entire event.
Make phone calls to students or their parents
(learn more)
(collapse)
Throughout the year, but particularly in the winter and spring months, the Office of Admission looks for help with
making phone calls to accepted or admitted students to congratulate them, answer questions, and generally
encourage them to come to Furman. Callers receive a list of students and contact them within a given period of time.
Costs associated with local or long distance calls are not reimbursed by Furman, so FAN members with unlimited
calling plans or free online calling software are best suited for this activity.
Help with multicultural recruitment efforts
(learn more)
(collapse)
Furman aspires to be a diverse community of women and men of different races, religions, geographic origins, socioeconomic backgrounds, personal characteristics and interests.
Thus, we are seeking FAN members who are interested in helping to achieve our goal of diversifying the student body and are comfortable with visiting with multicultural students.
In addition to interviews, these FAN members may also have the opportunity to help with various multicultural events.
